Tampa Penguins are labeled the "outcasts" of the penguin family. Being native to Tampa Bay, Florida, you can imagine what an odd sight they were. Male Tampa Penguins are green with orange bellies, while the females are orange with green bellies. Females have a different metabolism and have a diet high in carotene from certain fish and sea snails, producing their bright orange color. The reasoning behind the males' coloring has yet to be determined. Tampa Penguins are satisfied with beaches-like exhibits with palm trees, some grass, some sand, and about 75% salt water. They live in large colonies consisting of an equal number of males and females on land. In the water, they tend to pair up as a defense mechanism against predators. In captivity, these animals put on amusing shows for their onlookers, often splashing about and dancing as if for entertainment.
